When should my child be examined?

The best age is usually around 8, and sooner if a severe problem is apparent. If a child's teeth tend to be crowded, it's especially important for us to see him or her before the lower baby molars are lost. These molars are usually bigger than the permanent teeth that replace them, so when they fall out, there's a little extra space available.

If nothing is done, the permanent teeth come in and drift forward, using up that space. But if we can save that precious space, treatment will be easier and there will be a better chance to avoid removing permanent teeth. The actual time for treatment depends on the type of problem, and that's why an early evaluation is important. At Belmont Orthodontics, there is no charge for this evaluation.

Most patients require a single phase of treatment, and this active treatment usually begins around the age of 10 - 12. However, in crowded cases as mentioned above, there is a decided advantage to starting treatment before the last of the baby teeth are lost. That is why having your child examined early is so valuable.

For some patients with very severe jaw growth problems, an early or first phase of treatment may begin as early as five. This is usually of short duration and is followed by a final phase of treatment some time in the future.

If you suspect a problem, it is most important to have your child examined before the lower baby molars are lost, usually around the age of 10. This is of particular importance if crowding is present because these molars are usually larger than the permanent teeth that replace them. So when they fall out, there's extra space available to help resolve the crowding

If nothing is done, the permanent teeth come in and drift forward, using up that space which is extremely difficult to regain. But if we can save that precious space, treatment will be easier and there will be a better chance to avoid removing permanent teeth
