October is National Orthodontic Health Month!


Yes, it’s true –October is National Orthodontic Health Month –and as we all know it’s also Halloween. Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through Orthodontic treatment. These treats can potentially cause damage that may prolong treatment time.

If it’s sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy, it’s a food that anyone wearing braces or retainers should avoid. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. The AAO urges patients to steer clear of the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:

o All hard candies
o All chewy candy
o Caramel
o Nuts
o Licorice
o Taffy
o Jelly beans
o Hard pretzels
o Bubblegum
o Popcorn (including unpopped kernels)
o Taco chips
o Ice

However, it’s not all bad news –Halloween does not have to be completely treatless! There are braces-friendly Halloween treats that can help you still enjoy the holiday. For example, plain chocolate candy is okay, provided you remember to brush and floss afterwards. Bobbing for apples or eating caramel apples….not so much. However, patients can enjoy thinly sliced apples, dipped in yogurt or creamy chocolate sauce. If you are craving sweet treats, we recommend foods that are soft, such as soft chocolate that can melt in one’s mouth or peanut butter cups. Overall, candies that aren’t sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy are generally acceptable.

Here’s a spook-tacular recipe you can try:

Halloween Parfait

Ingredients:

o 3 boxes instant vanilla pudding (enough to make 12 one-half cup servings)

o 1 teaspoon red food coloring

o 1/2 teaspoon yellow food coloring

o One 9-ounce package plain chocolate wafers

o 6 cups milk

o Chocolate syrup to taste

o One 8-ounce can mandarin oranges, drained

Directions:

Combine pudding mix and milk in large bowl as directed on the package. Refrigerate until firm. Crush chocolate wafers into crumbs, using a food processor, or put the wafers into a zip-lock bag and crush with a rolling pin.

Combine red and yellow food coloring in a small bowl. Stir into pudding thoroughly, until pudding is orange. Alternate layers of pudding with layers of chocolate crumbs in a parfait cup or glass for a total of three layers of pudding. Top each layer of crumbs

with chocolate syrup to taste before adding the next pudding layer. Top each parfait with mandarin oranges and additional chocolate wafer crumbs.

Makes eight 8-ounce servings.
